Case Study: Styling Steve’s Urban Condo

Our client, we’ll call him “Steve”, worked with another interior designer before contacting us to transform his already decent living room into an even better space.

Before

Steve’s original designer previously made recommendations on paint colors for the wall in shades of gray, navy, and light blue. There was some existing furniture like the white leather sectional and the fire-pit coffee table, but it was a bit bare and could definitely use some styling.

一开始给Steve做房间改造的设计师们给他的建议是把墙面刷成灰色，海军蓝，和浅蓝色。有一些现有的家具，如白色的皮革截面和火坑咖啡桌，但是这些家具都有待重新装饰一下。

Finished Room

Our designer started with the basic elements in the room:

• A modern and structured white leather sectional

• White fire-pit coffee table

• Chrome/polished nickel metals

• Varying shades of blue and gray

She realized the space’s main requirement would be a great statement painting above the sectional, which would make the space more visually interesting, bring in some color, and tie in the different accent wall colors. She and our client sourced a custom piece from Etsy artist, Tracey Kafka, who made her largest painting to date (she had to make the canvas herself at 72″ long!). The painting brought in red which was a new color to the space that Steve loved.

Harlow Chair

With just the sectional, the space didn’t serve well for conversation. So our designer brought in an additional seat to make the space more engaging for conversation. She brought in the Harlow Chair from Arhaus — a modern style chair with the tiniest bit of a rustic look, so the space would feel a little bit more lived-in. She placed the accent chair opposite the sectional on an angle to create a conversation area. After the design process, Steve mentioned how this tweak really changed the way he entertained and chatted with friends.

Platner Side Table and Rustic Wood Desk Lamp

Some other pieces that helped tie the space together was a splurge accent table in polished nickel. The metal table helped tie in with the sectional metal legs, chair frame, and coffee table so that the space felt more cohesive. A playful custom lamp from Etsy lamp design shop, Ninoshea Design, adds some character to the space.

Overall

Another tweak our designer made was relocating the large Arc light to the other side of the room. Generally speaking, relocating the largest pieces next to a wall opens up the entrance to a room. Lastly, we added in some throw pillows with different textures to add some warmth to the space. Nothing too fussy or fancy, but just simple cool textures. The previous designer had framed the sliding doors with a rich navy, so our designer picked up this theme by adding rich navy velvet curtains so it looked more cohesive. This simple update allowed Boston’s skyline to stand out (instead of the previous white curtains popping against the navy!). Overall, we helped the client create a space for relaxation and entertaining.

Budget

While the budget was a bit higher for decor and accessories, these are all pieces that can transform different spaces in the future if Steve moves. Since all pieces have classic shapes (meaning their lines and designs have been around for 30+ years) the style will continue to last for years to come.

Interior Design Case Study: A Stylish Tech Condo with a View

Our client, Andrew, is the founder of a San Francisco food tech start-up. He recently purchased a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo in Oakland’s Jack London Square. With no furnishings and no experience designing a home, he turned to us for help. He wanted his condo to feel like a serene, Japanese-inspired, tech-savvy place. So we infused smart home technology and zen sensibilities to create a space with style. And we were able to design 95% of it online.

We began by meeting Andrew to tour the condo and take measurements. From there, we designed his condo online. We discussed design needs and preferences via email, then checked on the condo during the remodel. Once all pieces were sourced and purchased, Andrew installed the design himself, with our help via email. Finally, we met in person to style the condo.

Floor Plan

Living/Dining Room

We transformed the living room by painting the walls a lighter shade of gray (Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl). Andrew’s curved TV and surround sound system took center stage, while his piano got tucked into the corner. We kept the living room clean and simple with a monochromatic color scheme, which we livened up with wood accents, pops of black and white, and geometric shapes throughout.

Office

As the CEO of a food tech company and a foodie himself, we framed photos from Andrew’s culinary experiences to set the tone in the office. Similar to the living room, tech takes center stage in this office, from his computer and speakers to his photography gear.

Master Bedroom

主卧

We wanted the master bedroom to feel calm and serene, so we selected a Japanese-inspired low platform bed, and we kept the color palette simple with whites, woods and blue-gray. Andrew’s flat screen TV and surround sound system is incorporated into the room as well.

我们需要让这个主卧保持一个冷静，沉着的基调感觉。所以我们选择用了日本元素的低平板床，并且我们保持了让这所房间保持了几个简单白色木质家具，蓝灰色的家具。当然，Andrew的曲面屏电视和音响环绕系统也标配在了主卧室。

Bathrooms

We upgraded the bathroom by installing a Japanese toilet and rain showers, then painted both bathrooms a light neutral color, replaced hardware and added art and accessories.

我们将浴室升级至了日式风格，包括日式冲头等等。之后这里用到了浅一些的自然颜色刷漆，更换了五金件和增添了艺术方面的装饰物。

Budget

Andrew purchased the piano and electronics himself, so those are excluded from our budget. In total, we furnished the condo from scratch for approximately $25k, which includes furnishings, rugs, linens, artwork and accessories. Light renovations, including paint, electrical, and light plumbing, totaled approximately $5k, with another $5k for the Japanese toilet, shower systems, lighting, hardware, the NEST system and Philips hue lights. Our design fee was $5k.
